Structural Modifications & CSC Re-Certification
Arctic Hazardous Materials Container
This project involved a CSC recertified container engineered for hazardous materials storage and extreme cold-climate deployment.
Location: Antarctic / King George Island
Application: Hazardous materials storage
Project Overview
This project involved structural modification and full CSC re-verification of a standard ISO container converted into a certified hazardous materials storage unit.
The container was designed for deployment in cold-climate industrial conditions, requiring both structural compliance and environmental durability.
Scope included:
- Structural redesign and reinforcement
- Load analysis and FEM verification
- CSC re-certification and plate renewal
- Preparation for regulated material storage
- ATEX & Safety System Integration
- Mechanical Load Testing & Certification
Engineering Challenge
Structural modifications such as wall openings, equipment integration and reinforcement elements can invalidate original CSC certification.
The primary objective was to:
- Maintain transport legality
- Ensure structural integrity under modified load paths
- Restore formal CSC approval
- Adapt the container to cold-climate operational requirements
Structural Modifications Executed
- Reinforcement of wall openings
- Equipment integration framework
- Internal structural adjustments
- Floor reinforcement for static loads
- Preparation for hazardous material storage configuration
All modifications were assessed for impact on container load-bearing capacity.
Technical Equipment & Safety Systems
The unit was equipped with:
- ATEX-compliant heating system
- Explosion-proof lighting
- Mechanical ventilation system
- Gas, smoke and fire detection sensors
- Integrated monitoring and alarm system
- Spill containment sump
- Internal shelving system
- Additional pedestrian access door
CSC Re-Verification Process
The re-certification process included:
01
Structural review and load analysis
02
Engineering verification and FEM validation
03
Implementation of reinforcement design
04
Mechanical load testing at certified facility before CSC approval.
05
Final inspection and documentation
06
Issuance / renewal of CSC Safety Approval Plate
Certification performed in accordance with applicable international transport regulations.
Deployment Outcome
The container was successfully deployed as a CSC-certified hazardous materials storage unit in an extreme cold-climate environment.
The final unit combined:
- Transport compliance
- Structural safety
- Environmental durability
- Regulatory readiness
The system remains fully transport-legal following modification.
